Sundays for Children (Infants – 5th Grade)
At Church of the Holy Spirit, we support parents’ efforts to teach their children to follow the Lord. We offer a safe and fun environment where children can grow in Jesus Christ. Children age three and above join their families for worship in the sanctuary at the beginning of the service. They sing with the entire church body and hear testimonies of how God is working in His church. After a blessing, the children are released to Sunday School. At the end of Sunday School, the children return to the service to celebrate Holy Communion with their families.
From Terry Johnson, our Children’s Minister: “At Church of the Holy Spirit we desire to engage children in a way that will inspire and equip them to know God intimately and become what He has designed them to be. Our goal is to give children the tools they need to walk successfully and humbly in this world, knowing they are loved and empowered by God and His Holy Spirit. We desire to encourage them as they take milestone steps in their maturity in Christ. We have a safe, fun, and helpful program for newborn children through fifth grade. We learn the Word of God, and truths about Him, and our need for a Savior. Not only do we offer a Sunday morning program, but we also offer service projects, outside church events, summer Vacation Bible School, seasonal special events, and individual projects for increased spiritual growth. I hope to meet you and your children soon! Contact me at email@example.com.
Nursery care for infants through age two is available for both the 8:45am and 11:00am services, and in the summer at our 10:00 service.
After the blessing, the preschool through 5thgrade children meet the Sunday School teacher at the back of the sanctuary and proceed to their multi-age class. The children are led in a Bible lesson, games, and activities. They return to the service for Holy Communion.
Sunday School (11:00am Service, or summer 10:00 Service)
After the blessing, the children are released to their Sunday School classes. The classes are divided as follows:
Preschool/K: The Preschool/K class meets in the classroom to the right of the Nursery. The children enjoy a snack while they listen to a Bible story. They also participate in games and activities related to the lesson.
1st-5th Grade: The 1st-2nd grade class and the 3rd-5th grade class start their Sunday School together for a greeting and overview from the Children’s Ministry Coordinator and to watch a brief video of the day’s Bible lesson. Then they split into two groups for further age appropriate discussion, Q&A, crafts, games, and snacks. The emphasis is on learning the Bible stories which are taught in such a way as to show that the Bible stories are true, that they reveal something of God’s character and/or plan, and that they are relevant to our lives every day. We memorize scripture and use homework to encourage the children to meditate on what they’ve learned and to reinforce it.
The Acolyte Ministry at CHS is comprised of several children in the parish who have willing hearts and able hands. They lead the Processions during worship, assist at the table during the Eucharist, assist with the Offering, and during Christmas and Easter, leading special worship such as Gospel Processions or other great traditions of the Anglican Church. Acolytes are among the oldest orders of the Church dating back to 251AD and in modern times are a reminder that “A little child shall lead them.”
Training is required and provided for all acolytes in a supportive and individual manner. We want our Acolytes to love serving God.

Vacation Bible School
CHS holds a summer Bible school that is always a hit with the kids! Check our announcements for more information about next summer’s VBS.
Our children are encouraged to be a part of any of CHS’ services, including the healing service and special dramas. We particularly want their participation in our Christmas, Epiphany, and Easter dramas. Other opportunities to serve in our regular services might include reading the Scripture lesson, musical offerings, ushering. Parents, please let a pastor know of your child’s desire to serve in a particular way, and we will discuss the appropriateness of that with you.
We have a whole page of links for all ages found here.
Of particular note: Daily Bible Study for Kids: The story automatically changes every day to go through much of the Bible in 6 months!
